Chicago coupling safety clips vs wire or nail
Occasionally people will ask us if they need to use the factory supplied safety clips with Chicago type 2-lug or 4-lug couplings. Our first thought is always - why not use them?
Yes, here is a blog entry dedicated to the humble Chicago Coupling Safety Clip:
We get it, they can go missing. They may not be readily available where the job is and no one packed any… But if the point of the safety clip, which has the word safety right in it, is to stay safe, then why side step this by using what you believe to be just as good? Sure there are wires, lanyard, and other things that will keep the coupling together but these materials flex and wear out over time. Our standard safety clip has an “R” shape design. This shape allows the pin to be clipped in and snap into place. It should not slide out if the coupling is rotated or is under abrasion during service. Our locking safety clip works like a safety pin to stay connected. Wire and lanyards run higher risk of user error. Should it be twisted? Is this gauge heavy enough? can I unwind and then reuse the same wire a few times? All of these add variables that reduce overall safety.
The short answer is, please use the included safety clips, our replacement packs, or our locking safety clips to reduce the risk of installation error or non-approved material degradation.
Lastly: Using a nail to secure the couplings seems a bit dangerous considering if the couplings blow apart, that nail becomes a high speed projectile. Avoid installing something in the name of safety that could end up being a hazardous itself.
Now should you use 1 clip or 2 clips on a 4-lug coupling. That is an argument for another time. (Spoiler, we say 2 clips).
